Summary/Abstract: Human lives in the world of stories. The intensive “narrative bath” (Ro-stek, 2019, p. 131) that a child is subjected to from the first days of its life, contri-butes to the development of the readiness to listen to stories, tell stories, understand them and interpret them. Therefore, the process of developing narrative competence begins from childhood and may continue in the course of human life. Narrative competence refers both to the understanding of an already formed narrative and to its creation in a variety of communicative situations. It changes in the course of life. Based on the literature review, selected theoretical and empirical findings concerning the development of narrative competence in childhood, adolescence and adulthood are presented.
