Summary/Abstract: The two most important Ottoman documents of the 19th century, the Hatisherif of 1839 and the Hatihumayun of 1856, brought significant changes to and refreshed the outdated, conservative, and petrified structure of the Ottoman state. Not only because of the shifts they caused in the internal political relations in terms of birth of secularism in the country, but also because of a series of radical reforms they started which then began to change the legal status and the economic position of the non-Muslim subjects. When the state began to change the structure of its judiciary and to establish courts distinct from the Sharia, non-Muslims joined them as equal members. This text analyses this segment in particular. First, the history of the formation and structure of the new judicial instances at the level of administrative-territorial units (nahiye, kaza, sanjak and vilayet), as well as their competencies, are briefly reviewed; and then, based on Ottoman and British sources, the role and participation of the non-Muslims in the structure of these instances in Macedonian cities is analysed.
