Summary/Abstract: The history of the railway in Macedonia clearly shows that the economic and strategic-political reasons that conditioned the construction of the most modern means of transport at the time – the railway – were the most important ones. Bitola, as one of the most important economic and trade centres of the Ottoman state, became the seat of a separate province in 1873, and so craftsmanship and trade began to develop there even more and faster, which intensified the construction of the Thessaloniki – Bitola railway. This article aims to give a clear picture of the functioning of Thessaloniki – Bitola railway by analyzing the conditions for constructing the Bitola Railway and the Written Decree, which was published in the fifth yearbook for the Bitola province in 1894 – 1895. It can be concluded that almost all rights and obligations of the two contracting parties, the Ottoman state and the concessionaire, are regulated in detail in this Decree for the construction of Thessaloniki – Bitola railway. The trust between the two parties was so great that even a preparation plan for a construction of another railway line, either from Bitola to Vlorë or from Bitola to Durrës, was planned but was never implemented.
