Emphasizing inaccessibleterrain and ethnic otherness, the images absorb new meanings when adapted to formulasof regional countries’ self-representations. The article elaborates on the chapter “The Lureof the Ethnic Dress: Eastern Europe in the Traveller’s Gaze” from Murawska-Muthesius’sImaging and Mapping Eastern Europe: Sarmatia Europea to the Communist Bloc, Routledge:New York, 2021.
