Summary/Abstract: The European Union itself is based on the rule of law and all its actions are based on treaties, which have been voluntarily and democratically approved by all member states. Given its importance for citizen’s trust in the Union and the effective delivery of its policies, the rule of law is of major relevance for the future of Europe. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of considerations regarding the respect of fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law, but also on the elaboration and application of Article 7 of the TEU regarding the serious violation of the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality , the rule of law, as well as respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities.
