Summary/Abstract: A few images of St. Clement of Rome could be seen in the churches on the territory of today’s Bulgaria, depicted from the 14th to the 18th centuries. A small number of them were found on the altar, whereas others – in friezes on the north and south walls of several churches in the western areas of the country. All of these images, however, lack full inscriptions with the names of the churches that the images of the bishops represent, which makes their definitive attribution difficult and raises the question about the possible contaminations with others holding the same name. Hence, the identification of the images is reduced to hypotheses. The article concerns some basic points in the memory formation of the Roman bishop, his popularity and his place in the mural painting programs of part of the Bulgarian Post-Byzantine churches. An attempt to identify some of these images, holding the name of Clement, is made on the basis of the established artistic practices, iconographic formulas and the general context of the presence of Roman bishops in the mural painting programs.
