Summary/Abstract: Commoners in old Korea used Minhwa, a Korean folk painting, to adorn their homes and wish themselves a long, happy life. It also appeared in the religious rites of Shamanism, Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. With a simple composition of stylized motifs and bright primary colours, Minhwa thrived on humour and ideas about life and societies in daily life. It was a means of consoling the nation. As a cultural expression and a living heritage, Minhwa fostered wisdom, endurance, and hope among the Koreans, allowing them to express emotions through collective memories of their aristocrat-commoner relationship using motifs of tigers-magpies-pine trees.
