Summary/Abstract: Because of its broad range of interpretations, the concept of human dignity has proven to be an elusive term in liberal rights discourse. This paper seeks to provide a theological reading of human dignity, which that could be useful in solving some tensions between equality and freedom. First, it tackles the question of whether a theological understanding of human dignity ought to be considered in the public sphere. Secondly, it proposes a theological interpretation of dignity, equality, and freedom. Lastly, it considers the important contribution that theological reading of dignity, equality and freedom can make to the rights discourse.
