Summary/Abstract: The question addressed in this article is about the persistence of the balance sheet approach in contempo-rary accounting. Historical analysis of selected accounting theories shows that the balance sheet approach and the income approach are considered as competing ones. Under equity theories the balance sheet view common for proprietary theory gave way to the income view as soon as entity theory gained in populari-ty. Under balance sheet theories, which were developing simultaneously, the balance sheet approach can be found in static accounting system and the income approach in dynamic accounting system. Theorists’ approaches depended on their opinion about the importance of the value and efficiency in accounting as well as definition of the main users of financial statements. As these issues are still important nowadays we can expect that the balance sheet view can still give way to the income view. The dispute over the priority in financial statements remains unsettled.
