Summary/Abstract: Professor Zbigniew Messner was born on the 13 March 1929 in Stryj. After finishing secondary school he became a student of the School of Economics in Katowice. During undergraduate studies, he started work as assistant lecturer in the Department of Accounting. In 1961 he obtained PhD degree from the School of Economics in Katowice and in 1969 PhD hab. from the Academy of Economics in Katowice. In 1972 Zbigniew Messner was promoted to the position of associate professor of the School of Econom-ics and finally in 1977 he became full professor. His works on cost accounting are an important contribu-tion to the development of Polish accounting theory. Professor Zbigniew Messner is an author of numer-ous monographs, articles and textbooks on cost accounting, financial accounting and application of com-puters and computer software in accounting. He also contributed significantly to education and develop-ment of accounting academics. Being the head of the Department of Accounting at the University of Economics in Katowice he made a big effort to promote it in Polish academic circles. In the 1970s he held the position of Vice-Rector and next the Rector of the Academy of Economics in Katowice. Apart from being a scientist and academic teacher, he was also involved in activities of recognized professional organizations such as the Polish Economic Society and the Accountants Association in Poland, where he held prominent posts.
