Summary/Abstract: In this paper we show the many faces of lying. We present a number of philosophical definitions of this speech phenomenon (from, inter alios, Aristotle, the pragmatists, and contemporary Polish ethicians), along with certain religious perspectives. Guidelines concerning the proper use of words recommended by the Polish Academy of Sciences are also presented. The aim of this paper is to show that irrespective of the discipline (philosophy, World Religions, linguistics), telling lies is viewed as something morally wrong. This is accompanied by a degree of logical reflection on lying, in particular with the proposal that lying be analysed neither in terms of syntax nor semantics, but on an ethical level.
