Notes and Comments on an Original Collection of Letters: Ion Muşlea – N. I. Dumitraşcu

Summary/Abstract: In the following pages, we will publish and comment on ten letters that circulated between Ion Muşlea and N. I. Dumitraşcu between December 9, 1930 and February 20, 1944. They were transcribed from documents (originals or copies) preserved at the Institute of Folklore Archive of the Romanian Academy in Cluj. This correspondence is fragmentary and not very interesting in terms of problematizing what we are accustomed to consider as major themes of folklore studies in the Interwar period. However, its importance is visible on at least two levels. First, it reveals information from the process of building the document collections of the Romanian Academy’s Folklore Archive and editing the institution’s journal. Secondly, it provides new data about the research activity of N. I. Dumitraşcu, “the most active folklorist in Oltenia region” (Ovidiu Bârlea), about whom we still know very little.
