Summary/Abstract: In this study, we take a look at the circumnavigations of the globe completed in the 20th and 21st centuries: the rise of a maritime empire outside Europe, the Great White Fleet’s journey around the world (1907–1909); the US Douglas Aircraft Company’s first flight around the globe (1924); U.S. Air Force non-stop flights in the Cold War around the Soviet Empire: Lucky Lady I. (1948), Lucky Lady II. (1949), Lucky Lady III. (1957); The first space success of the Soviet Union: the Sputnik Shock (1957); USS Triton, the first nuclear submarine to circumnavigate of the world underwater under the Magellan project (1960); The Vostok 1 in orbit: space travel by Yuri Gagarin (1961); The USS Enterprise nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in Operation Sea Orbit (1964): Circumnavigation of the globe underwater by three nuclear submarines of the Soviet Navy (1966); American astronauts on the moon under the Apollo program (1969); The Columbia Space Shuttle’s first trip (1981); The USS Missouri (BB-63) battleship’s journey around the world (1986); and marking the beginning of the 21st century, the first circumnavigation of the globe by Chinese warships (2002) – China on its way to becoming a naval empire.
