Summary/Abstract: Grand Bazaar is constituted of parts that are different and yet complete each other, and of structures of different features coming together. It includes rectangular bedestens with domes, khans with a courtyard in the middle, and some irregular shopping streets between these which are covered with vaults. Bedestens and khans are visible from the bird’s eye with their height and geometrical forms. Shopping streets in the inner parts which cause people to perceive the structure as a labyrinth make connection to the city. The parts of the structure, which have different forms, heights, open and closed space connections, constitute the Grand Bazaar through integrating with each other in an aesthetic way when they come together. The irregularity of the streets completes the regular organisation of bedestens and khans. The structure, whose construction and use covers long years, has features of basic design that focuses on architectural and artistic studies. Through the structure, it is possible to observe notions such as point, line, surface, plane and volume, shape / figure and form, interspace, direction, colour, texture, tone, movement / motion, light and shadow, geometry, scale and measure, ratio and proportion, modulation, repetition, rhythm, contrast, suitability and harmony, unison, balance - symmetry, hierarchy, sovereignty. Within the frame of the paper, information of the architectural features of Grand Bazaar is given; features of basic design are conveyed and these are exemplified through Grand Bazaar. The visuals that are used in the study belong to the study on Istanbul Grand Bazaar conducted by students of Department of Architecture in Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University. Through the study, it was aimed for the students to obtain information on the historical space, grasp the importance of historical value, and exemplify the criteria, which they use when making a new design, through structures in the historical environment. The conclusion also focuses on the architectural design criteria of the Grand Bazaar that can be used for other designs.
