Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a new status approach to national identity and its formation in adolescence, elaborated by the authors. It is focused on the results of a study of statuses of national identity of adolescents that was carried out in 2004 on 532 adolescents, pupils and students, aged 16-21. The results show that the most widely spread among Bulgarian adolescents is the status of moratorium (63%), followed by diffusion (16%), achieved identity (15%) and foreclosed identity (6%). The relationship between a motivation for migration and the statuses is also revealed. The results are discussed from the point of view of development of national identity in the contemporary world – its collapse or its integration with other types of transnational identities.
