Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to represent the concept of structure and the development of structural linguistics, starting from Aristotle's concept of essenceand Plato's interpretation of the system of signs. The main part of the text is dedicated to structural linguistics, concentrating upon the most significant contributions of its founder, Ferdinand de Saussure, as well as the development of European Structuralism (the Prague Linguistic Circle, the Geneva School of Linguistics, and the Copenhagen School) and American Structuralism (Anthropological Linguistics and the epoch of Distributionalism). Furthermore, a minute description of the relationship between structural linguistics and genetic structuralism is provided, focusing on the scholarly achievements of Lucien Goldmann. Finally, the basic postulates of Noam Chomsky's generative grammar are presented, which, according to many linguists, radically departs from the fundamental structuralist considerations.
