Summary/Abstract: Basing on Jacques Derrida’s writings devoted to his late friends and colleagues, this article is an attempt to outline the principles of the politics and ethics of mourning. Furthermore, by describing the aporias and paradoxes in which the discourse of mourning is inevitably entangled, it emphasizes the ethico-political significance of irreducible tension between universality of the law and singular responsibility for the mortal or the dead other. From this point of view, mourning is recognized as not just one phenomenon among others but rather an originary condition through which ethics and politics gain their hyperbolic character.
