Summary/Abstract: ‘Imād al-Dīn Zengī, son of Ḳasīm al-Dawla Aḳsunḳur, one of the most essential ghulām of Sultan Alparslan, is one of the prominent names in the struggle of the Seljuks against the Crusaders. Orphaned at a young age after his father had been killed, Zengī lived in Aleppo for a while with the Turkomāns around him and then settled in Mosul at the request of Kerbogha. While Zengī spent more than a quarter of a century in Mosul under the administration of Sonqurcha, Musa al-Turkomānī, Jaqarmish, Chavli, Mawdūd, Aḳsunḳur al- Bursuqī, and Juyush Beg, following Kerbogha, this period corresponds to more than half of his political life. The Turkomān amir first fought under the auspices of Kerbogha, faced the Crusaders under the rule of Jaqarmish, made his name known in different geographies during the Mawdūd era, and was appointed to an administrative task under the control of Aḳsunḳur al-Bursuqī. While growing up under the auspices of Turkish governors seriously affected Zengī’s political and military career, amir skillfully used the experience and fame he gained from them for the rest of his life. In this study, we tried to convey the youth period of the Turkomān amir from the relevant literature, unlike the studies on ‘Imād al-Dīn Zengī so far. The article, written in chronological order, starts from the childhood of Zengī and continues until the day he was appointed to the Mosul administration.
