Summary/Abstract: The text examines the illustrations by the artist Pencho Georgiev, created for the Ancient Bulgaria series. As a painter, graphic artist, applied artist and scenographer, he participated actively in the artistic life of the 1920s and 1930s and joined in the processes of modernisation of Bulgarian art. In the applied graphic arts, he creates a number of illustrations, posters, advertisements, murals, etc. Among the first books whose layout was done entirely by him were: The Red Lantern (1925) by N. Fol, The Madara Horseman (1926) by D. Panchev, Primroses (1926) by E. Popdimitrov, etc. He participated in different periodical editions, among them also individual issues of the Ancient Bulgaria library series (1928–1929), with ink drawings. Their place in the context of illustration art and book layout of that time period and their relationship with the artist’s stage designs, have been examined. The series was intended for a general audience and was published from 1928 to 1943, edited by Petar Karapetrov. Contributors to the magazine included the names of prominent Bulgarian writers and artists of the 1920s and 1930s.
