Summary/Abstract: During the socialist era in Bulgaria, every film production, as a general rule of filmmaking practice at Boyana Film Studios (1962–1989), included a full-time on-set photographer. The work of the still photographer covers a wide range of tasks. During the preparation of a production, the photographer supports the main creative team as he captures clarifying photos of locations and objects and also makes portraits at the castings for the main and supporting roles in movies. Later, with the already selected actors, he takes photos of costume fittings and makeup tests. During the shooting period, the photographer documents the working process (behind the scenes). Among his main tasks is also the preparation of advertising shots from key moments in the movie. Thus, through the years, a huge photo archive has been collected, in which moments of the working process with iconic Bulgarian film creators and also screen incarnations of generations of Bulgarian actors were captured. In the context of the time passed, many of the on-set photographs have exceeded their main task and have become independent works of art.
