Summary/Abstract: The bilateral cooperation between China and Bulgaria has been very important for the reception of traditional Chinese opera performances in Bulgaria. The notions of Chinese arts and culture, obtained through reading and attendance of other traditional Chinese art performances, have also been essential. The most important is the very process of interaction between performers and audiences during the traditional Chinese opera performances in Bulgaria. The present paper examines the first Chinese troupes which have visited Bulgaria in the first decade after the establishment of the bilateral relations. The text also outlines some strategic principles in search of full spectator’s reception among the Bulgarian societies and audiences. The research is based on archives, scientific editions, publications in periodicals, and memories of performers. The applied interdisciplinary approach combines historical, analytical, comparative, music-theoretical, social anthropological, etc. knowledge.
