The concept of European unity in the political thought of the Second and Third Polish Republic – an outline

Summary/Abstract: The motif of European unity has a long and distinguished presence in the continental cultural tradition. The plurality and diversity of relevant concepts serve as the evidence of the strong inspirational potential of the notion of European community. The idea was embraced during all historic periods, starting with elemental federative projects in the ancient Greece, to structurally complex contemporary projects. It was promoted by rulers and dissidents; it was promulgated in the Eastern, Central and Western Europe; it was postulated by left -wing and right -wing thinkers; it was substantiated and justified by lay and religious (Christian or even “New Christian”) principles; it was based on universalistic and particularistic arguments; it was embodied in federative or confederative, centralized or decentralized, projects. It seems safe to infer that the endorsement of European unity transcended many temporal, geographical, social,political, geopolitical, economic, professional, doctrinal or religious borders.
