Summary/Abstract: This paper is dedicated to etymological doublets in French. The purpose is to group existing words in French according to their common origin and to propose a new typology of these groups of words. The majority of the cases studied are words with Latin origin but there are also some examples from other languages. A related issue which is addressed are the loanwords and the socio-historical factors which determine the language development
