Summary/Abstract: This paper investigates the different uses of the linguistic unit das heißt (that means) in spoken German from the perspective of Interactional Construction Grammar. The investigation uses empirical data from the research and teaching body (FOLK) of the Institute of German Language (IDS). The focus lies on the documentation and classification of all connective, pragmatic and discourse functional uses of das heißt which can be found in the data. The construction grammar approach allows to analyze the use of das heißt on a variety of linguistic levels (e.g. syntax, semantics, and pragmatics). Furthermore, the approach enables the inclusion of the sequential embedding of das heißt which can be crucial for its function in an ongoing conversation. Finally, it is explored whether the different uses of das heißt can be reduced to an abstract construction and whether the current use of reflects tendencies of pragmaticalisation.
