Summary/Abstract: The totalitarianism of the XX century deeply marked the social, political, economic, intellectual, and cultural life. Romania is going through many changes after the Second World War, and radical decisions that the Romanian communist leaders dictated at the administrative level, under the pressure of the Soviet leaders, inevitably influenced the art and, of course, the literature. The purpose of this article, starting from the brief presentation of the way in which the control of the communist leaders on intellectual life has been imposed, is to configure the image of the book as a tool for propagating communist ideas in a totalitarian society. This paper illustrates how the book and the practice of writing of the book are reflected in a society in which propaganda and indoctrination of the population operate, where the purge of libraries and bookstores is practiced, respectively the replacement of elites with people of the political. Concurrent, the creation and promotion of socialist realist texts are imposed in literature, which are never published without being subject to censorship.
