Summary/Abstract: In this article, the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras) examination is presented and its constituent parts are discussed. From a communicative perspective, the tasks in the examination prioritize actions which are relevant to interaction in real-life situations. Regarding the teaching and learning of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, these tasks can be applied as potential teaching material. Taking into consideration the impact of an examination in different social spheres, Celpe-Bras has also collaborated to redirect the teaching activity through reflection on classroom practice. We expect that this discussion will contribute to further in-depth consideration of teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language.
