Summary/Abstract: In the textbooks for secondary schools, the older types of texts are predominant. The language of the writers from the 19th century differs from the modern language in the phonetic, morphological and syntactic characteristics. The differences in the semantics of archaic lexis are conditioned by extralinguistic factors, time and space, and what is more, some of the meanings in the belletristic text are poetic. The lexis is the part of the language system which is most prone to changes, because it is in the lexis that the culture of a nation is reflected most directly and quickly. The task of this paper is to examine the optimal lexicographic representation of archaic lexemes present in the texts of the textbooks for secondary schools. The importance of the reception of the older writers’ lexis by students imposes the need to design particular, specialized dictionaries for the textbooks adapted for students. The data about the semantics of the lexis of traditional culture are collected in an interdisciplinary way; the semantics of the corpus of lexis excerpted from the textbooks has been tested in the field and in the 19th century literature. The aim of this study is to present the lexicographic procedure, the product of which is a dictionary of the lexis of traditional culture achieved by combining several approaches to the semantics of lexis, mostly linguocultural, from the viewpoint of the writer of these lines.
