Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this study is to present an international research project entitled APVV 18-0115 Language in the City – Documenting the Multimodal Semiosphere of Linguistic Landscapes in Slovakia and in a Comparative Perspective. This paper focuses on the specifics of the linguistic landscapes in Slovakia (Banská Bystrica) and Germany (Erlangen), on the characteristics and results of a qualitative analysis of typical features in the selected locality of both cities in the context of multilingualism. In our interdisciplinary research of the linguistic landscape in a selected locality of Banská Bystrica (Štefan Moyzes Square and Horná Street in the city centre) and german city of Erlangen (Hauptstraße) in the context of multilingualism, we confirmed and continue to confirm the occurrence of several languages in the names and labels of shops and establishments. This fact points to a clear intercultural linguistic intention of the issuers.
