Summary/Abstract: The right to education is a fundamental human right stipulated in the international treaties as well as in the national legislation. A component of this right is represented by the Lifelong Education concept through which are promoted actions that tend to ensure the exercise of the right to education for people of all ages, including elders. In this context and taking into consideration the significant growth of the number of old people, at the University ”Dunărea de Jos” of Galaţi was established the University of the Third Age which has the mission of organising educational programmes destined to people above the age of 55. The concept of University of the Thrid Age was born in France and after that was adopted by the majority of states because the process of learning at any age provides individual benefits that become an advantage for the whole society. U3A of the University ”Dunărea de Jos” is the first of this kind founded in Romania and started functioning in 2016, in Galati, following the French inspired model and promoting the right to education for elder people through courses adapted to their desires, interests and aspirations.
