STEPHAN SCHULLER AND JOSEPH BENJAMIN BARBENIUS: CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF BRAŞOV’S FINE ART FROM XVIIITH CENTURY

Summary/Abstract: Stephan Schuller and Joseph Benjamin Barbenius: Contributions to the Knowledge of Braşov’s Fine Art from XVIIIth Century. This study comprises certain data regarding two XVIIIth century artists from Braşov: Stephan Schuller (?-1734) and Joseph Benjamin Barbenius (1754-1814). Stephan Schuller’s activity is documented both in Braşov and Sibiu, between 1720-1734. He is mentioned as a portraitist and in connection with some baroque altars from Bârsa Land (1720 - the altar of the Evangelical Church of Codlea; 1721 - the project to build a new altar for Black Church from Braşov; 1730 - the altar of St. Martin's Church from Braşov). His only surviving work is the altar of St. Martin's Church from Braşov. Joseph Benjamin Barbenius, a famous doctor from Braşov, is one of the first amateur artists from Transylvania. While kept during the interwar period in the Saxon Museum of Bârsa Land collection, his works were lost. This study analyzes a series of works from Braşov Art Museum and Bran National Museum collections that could be attributed to Barbenius.
