Summary/Abstract: The specter of a debt crisis, which began hovering over the eurozone back in late 2009, has wholly dominated the economic and political debate in the EU. It put a question mark over not only the further existence of the euro, but also the form and the future of European integration. The action taken by EU institutions and eurozone member states, Germany in particular, proved belated and lacking in consistency.
