Political and economic aspects of Russia’s accession to the WTO

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the determinants, course and prospects of the negotiations on Russia’s membership of the World Trade Organization. For eighteen years from 1993, the country unsuccessfully strove to meet the accession conditions posed by WTO members. A breakthrough came after a Russian-Georgian compromise was reached, with Swiss intermediation, resulting in a consent to the terms of Russian entry into the WTO.
