The Forgotten Bulgarians: Peter Kermekchiev – Patriot аnd Philanthropist

Summary/Abstract: The charitable and public activity of the Bulgarian entrepreneur Petar Kermekchievis is little known or rather unexplored in its various statements. The following publication is an attempt to present his philanthropic and patriotic activities in favour of the homeland in the light of the modern historiography and the existing source based in the Central State Archives–Sofia.Petar Kermekchiev occupies a well-deserved place among the contributors of enlightenment, cultural renewal and national independence of the Bulgarians in the second half of the 19th century. The enterprising businessman invested a significant part of his wealth made from trade and entrepreneurship in church and spiritual independence. He approached every endeavour with the clear vision that it is a long-term investment for the future political, economic and intellectual development of the free principality of Bulgaria.
