Summary/Abstract: The subject of the Holocaust perpetrated by the German state against the Jews during World War II already has a rich literature. One of the less researched issues is the period of the first phase of the Holocaust in the provincial areas (villages and small ghett os). The presented text discusses the process of ghettoization, indirect extermination (exploitation, starvation, diseases, imprisonment in the ghetto) and direct crimes against Jews in the provincial areas of the occupying county of Kielce – Kreishauptmannschaft Kielce. The results of the research indicate that the course of the first phase of the Holocaust in this area did not differ from the phenomena described in the literature with reference to other areas of the General Government. A drastic deterioration of living conditions took place from the middle of 1941, in connection with the creation of ghettos, the deportation of thousands of Jews from the territories incorporated into the Third Reich to previously small Jewish centres, and the application in practice of the Third Decree on the restriction of the right of residence in the General Government of 15 October 1941. Besides, it was established that at least 98 Jews living in the Kreis Kielce province were repressed in the German prison in Kielce. However, the German authorities did not succeed in breaking contact between Jews imprisoned in the ghett os and the Polish population.
