Summary/Abstract: This article presents a proposal to take into account the grammatical notion of comparison as a criterion that is instrumental in distinguishing linguistic functions of Latin lexemes derived from quality adjectives, traditionally named adverbs. The formal description of the morphological and syntactic features of the lexemes bene, male, plane, sane, longe and prope makes the author conclude that their linguistic use is not limited to that of gradable adverbs, employed as verbal modifiers. When these words are in their positive form in the sentence, they are capable of performing other functions. First of all, they can be used as exponents of gradability, marking the non-relative degrees of feature intensity. Additionally, the lexeme sane functions as an epistemic particle, deontic particle and as a so called contextual asyntagmatic lexeme.
