Summary/Abstract: The European Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR) has granted religious organizations the possibility to process, even in the absence of the legal basis of consent, the personal and sensitive data - and therefore also religious data - of former members. This change, although in line with the objective of guaranteeing greater freedom to religious institutions in the performance of their activities, may affect the free exercise of the individual believer’s right to change his or her religious faith. The aim of this paper is to verify whether the current European Union law on the processing of personal data guarantees adequate protection of the individual believer’s right to religious freedom in the event of conversion to another religious belief or deconversion.
