Summary/Abstract: The number of buildings, streets and districts inhabited mainly by poor people is growing in the Czech Republic. The number of municipalities that have to address the problem of a concentration of poverty can be estimated at four hundred. There is a growing number of socially excluded localities, as these places have come to be referred to, and there are various, often distorted, ideas about them. That practically all Czech Roma citizens live in them, for example, which is not true. Qualified estimates of the number of Roma citizens in the Czech Republic compared to the total number of inhabitants of socially excluded localities and the proportion of Roma citizens among them show that most Roma citizens lead normal lives. It is true, however, that Roma citizens are the majority among the poor inhabitants of excluded localities, which worsens their image as people who will never work because an easy life on benefits suits them. This research therefore looks at the facts and findings thrown up by the work of the Agency for Social Inclusion, which has operated in more than 60 municipalities and microregions of the Czech Republic since 2008.
