Summary/Abstract: The relationship between social policy and social work is sometimes simply defined whereby social work is one of the tools of social policy; rarely is this relationship defined from the perspective of social work, i.e., what social policy is in relation to social work. From this perspective, social policy may be perceived as a means to changing the adverse situation of a client, or as the purpose of intervention through social work. This perspective is absolutely primary in the case of so-called "critical social work", and this paper is devoted to the potential of critical social work with respect to changing social policy. The paper, which is conceived as a theoretical consideration, aims to reflect on the possibilities of "critical social work" in relation to changing social policies. I first define the relationship between social policy and social work as preferred in the following text, then I define "critical social work", and then I attempt to present four selected "critical social work" trends and their potential in relation to influencing social policies. I use mainly Anglo-Saxon literature as my theoretical background, but examples of how those involved in "critical social work" influence social policies will also be sought within the Czech context.
