Summary/Abstract: This article aims to quantify both the economic differences between divorced and other individuals and their families and, as far as the data allows, the various economic impacts of potential divorce for currently married couples in the Czech Republic. The comparison of the economic activity of divorced, married and single individuals revealed a significant degree of labour division within families. The results suggest that, following divorce, those partners who, when married, dedicated themselves more to non-market forms of work, i.e. mostly women, find it more difficult to adapt to the new economic situation and the need to pursue labour market forms of work. Significant differences were found to exist between families headed by divorced individuals and married couples, while households headed by divorced women reported some of the lowest incomes. Moreover, the loss of shared net income following divorce was found to contribute significantly to these differences. At present, married women aged 20 to 70 years who are not studying or who do not receive an old-age pension lose more than 20% of their net income in the event of the termination of the full sharing of net income with their husbands. In terms of household spending, major differences were observed between the households of married persons and those divorced with children. Of a range of different types of divorced households, the households of divorced women with children were found to have the lowest levels of spending. Finally, a number of recommendations are proposed concerning reducing the economic impact of divorce.
