Summary/Abstract: The requirements and overall situation of those caring for family members over the long term formed the subject of the "Support for informal carers" research project conducted by the Fund for Continuing Education with financial support from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. The project, which is funded by the Human Resources and Employment operational programme (priority axis 3 - Social Integration and Equal Opportunities) of the ESF, commenced in February 2014 with the aim of designing a systematic support system for those involved in the long-term care of family members who, due to poor health, are forced to rely on help from others. An integral part of the project consisted of mapping the requirements and life situation of carers by means of extensive quantitative and qualitative research methods. The information gathered was subsequently processed by means of a number of analytical studies and the analytical phase of the project ended with a conference, held in Prague in June 2015, at which the key themes revealed by the analysis were presented to attendees. This article aims to introduce these themes to readers.
