Summary/Abstract: This pilot project based in the Czech Republic deals with differences in time preferences between homeless persons and a control sample of the Czech population. Based on data derived from in-depth surveys (homeless persons N = 15, control sample N = 20) and the subsequent performance of the Mann-Whitney test the hypothesis of the high time preferences of homeless persons was verified. The conclusions of the test revealed significantly higher time preferences for those living permanently on the street compared to the control sample population made up of passengers using the main train station in Prague. The study also applies the concept of time preference and a high discount rate in order to determine the possible causes of homelessness.
