Summary/Abstract: On 16 and 17 April the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, the European Commission and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe hosted an international seminar on the theme of the Active Ageing Index. The Active Ageing Index (AAI) consists of an analytical tool for the measurement of the potential of ageing societies and the assessment of the position of older people in these societies. The construction of this tool was initiated in the context of the announcement of 2012 as the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations (EY2012). The aim was to provide a framework aimed at accommodating increasing sensitivity to ongoing demographic changes through highlighting the positive aspects inherent in the addressing of related social, economic and political challenges.
