Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes sixteen censuses of the Bulgarian population in the period from 1879 to 2010. This work provides information on the normative and bylaws regulating the organization and stages through which the population censuses pass during the considered periods. The article traces the migration processes from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century in the Bulgarian state, as well as a number of historical events that had a serious impact on the structure of the population. Attention is paid to the waves of refugees observed in the 20s of the 20th century, as the latter brought enormous financial and economic consequences for Bulgaria. Data on birth rate, death rate and natural population growth are presented. The age composition and educational status of the enumerated population is studied, as well as the degree of urbanization during some of the enumerations of the Bulgarian population.
