Summary/Abstract: The litany is a procession performed simultaneously with prayer. It is a procession usually with a wonderworking icon and other objects that are sacred to Christianity. Nowadays it usually starts from one church or holy place and proceeds to another led by clergy carrying icons and insignia of Christianity (symbols of faith), followed by the laity (people). It ends with the veneration of the sacred relic. The purpose of this event is to invoke God's protection on the city and the people who live there. In the past, the litany used to stop in front of various temples in the towns and prayers were read there by the priest, as is the modern tradition in Nessebar today.
