Summary/Abstract: The article deals with effects of automation on the extent and contents of human work in manufacturing. The findings are based on a survey, in which 273 Czech manufacturing companies took part in 2019, and on follow-up in-depth interviews with some of them. The companies regarded unskilled workers, welders and assistant administration employees as professions most vulnerable to automation. However, the overall estimated effect of technologies on labour displacement is relatively small, automation in the Czech manufacturing was not disruptive before the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and expected changes in the number of employees were linked to economic development in sectors rather than to automation. According to the respondents, operating new machines will require more IT skills while, on the other hand, some tasks are becoming less complex.
