Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the attitudes of the management of medium and large engineering companies in the Plzen region to their workforces, and attempts to estimate the extent to which the advent of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) poses a threat to ordinary employees. A questionnaire survey census was conducted of top management representatives on the introduction of I4.0 in their companies and the position of the workforce in this process. We determined the extent of the implementation of I4.0 with respect to ten selected company operational areas; the issues taken into account by the management when investing in I4.0; the problems faced by companies when implementing I4.0 and the impact of the introduction of I4.0 on ordinary employees. The results are presented in an aggregated form according to three company categories - minimum, below-average and average levels of the implementation of I4.0. The article concludes that the advent of I4.0 does not endanger ordinary employees since the management continues to rely on them. When investing in I4.0, management takes into account ordinary employees; moreover, there is a greater willingness to adapt existing employees than to hire new staff and, if the management considers hiring new employees, it also considers adapting existing personnel. In addition, as companies progress to I4.0, so does the willingness of the management to adapt the employment positions of ordinary employees.
