Summary/Abstract: The paper is based on data obtained from an extensive survey of the homeless population in the Czech Republic conducted by the Research Institute for Labour and Social Affairs. It presents findings on the economic activities and material and financial sources of rough sleepers, and users of night shelters and temporary shelters for homeless. Attention is devoted specifically to their sources of income, their average daily spending, the structure and extent of their debts and the opportunities they have to fulfil their basic human needs. The poverty of persons who sleep mainly in public areas was found to be significantly deeper than those homeless who use shelters. The survey findings are presented in the context of the process of adaptation to the situation of homelessness. Those habits that make surviving in poverty easier for homeless persons are presented together with the obstacles that hinder their successful reintegration into society.
