The Political in Themersons’ Films

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes two films by Franciszka and Stefan Themersons (Europe from 1932;Calling Mr. Smith from 1943) and sketches of an unrealized project (Child of Europefrom 1944). Through my interpretations, Sroka seeks to present various aspects of thepolitical in Themersons’s film activity. Sroka argues we should avoid neutralizing theideological commitments of the artists we usually perceive as pioneers of experimentalaesthetics and not critics of everyday life. As Sroka shows in her examples, the avantgardeimperative to change the world manifests in Themersons’s works in the form ofbiomorphic, anti-capitalist reflection, and the appreciation of the civic society idea.
