Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the translation dynamics in texts from East European literaturespublished by the German journal Merkur. Deutsche Zeitschrift für europäisches Denken,published since 1947. Merkur has played a crucial part in shaping the intellectuallandscape of Germany and Europe. Founded in the French occupational zone (Baden-Baden), Merkur’s form has been shaped by the tension of the political confrontationbetween East and West. The journal has regularly published translations from nearly allEuropean, American, and Asian literatures, adding ample commentary and paratexts.The analysis focuses on the following factors: (1) the research potential of Merkur’s archiveand the social factors of literary texts’ circulation; (2) Merkur’s political-cultural potential;(3) Merkur’s space in the transnational field; (4) the economic and programmatic roleof journals cooperating with Merkur; (5) functions of mediators and translators in theframework of politicized import from East European literatures.
