Summary/Abstract: In a very voluminous, versatile and, from a scientific viewpoint, invaluable manuscript legacy of academician Viktor Novak, kept in the Archives of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade, the author has found Viktor’s in-depth report written in April 1935 about political circumstances in Yugoslavia. Bogoljub Jevtić, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Yugoslavia, asked Novak to travel to Zagreb and Ljubljana, spend some time there, inform himself about the political mood, and submit a report thereon. Novak completed his task highly professionally, conscientiously and responsibly. Being a sincere Yugoslav of an integral type and deeply committed to having Yugoslavia preserved, he specified in his report the politicians from Croatia and Slovenia who deserved trust and the political and social forces that opposed the joint state, which is why more energetic and stricter measures had to be introduced against them. He considered Vlatko Maček the most acceptable person for cooperation in Croatia, stating he had the largest number of adherents, was the most influential and the least demanding and inflexible. Of Slovenian politicians, he opted for Anton Korošec. In his view, the most dangerous and most dogmatic opponents of Yugoslavia and Yugoslavism, and perilous hatemongers towards Serbia and the Serbs were Roman Catholic clericalism, Franco-Furtims and Communists. Novak proposed numerous measures to be undertaken to stabilise the state and overcome the national antagonisms. In the introductory part of the paper, the author analyses Novak’s report, outlining both its virtues and weaknesses. He underlines that he publishes Novak’s report in its entirety as it is an interesting and important source that contributes to better understanding of political circumstances in Yugoslavia after the murder of King Aleksandar.
